The Eliot School
The Upper Falls School was built in 1869 at the intersection of Central Avenue and Gould Street, to replace the one-room school known as the Little Red Schoolhouse. It was renamed in 1886 in honor of John Eliot, the “Apostle to the Indians”, who preached in this area in the 1600s, and translated the Bible into Algonquian. A new Eliot School was built on nearby Cedar Street in 1956; this in turn was demolished in 2002 and its replacement is now under construction.
